Motivated by creating contemporary clothes and dismissive of western definitions of sophistication, Rei Kawakubo launched Comme des Garçons in 1969, instead drawing upon traditions from her homeland, Japan, blending inspiration with modern techniques and innovations. This 1980s black dress, made from what feels like a tightly woven wool mix contrasted by a silky off-white collar with asymmetrical neckline and raw hems on the sleeves, demonstrates why Kawakubo's designs were considered avantgarde: at once simple and timeless, while simultaneously challenging traditional notions of beauty, femininity and silhouette.
